Looking back: Conference of the Kulturhanse Laboratories
Founding and the Common Good in the Periphery
Imagine: there is a place in your neighborhood where active citizens and social entrepreneurs work together to develop solutions to your local challenges. Then the cultural change we desire would be achieved.
We wanted to discuss how we can achieve this cultural change and what it will take to do so. On May 15, 2025, Kulturhanse set sail for the Conference of the Kulturhanse Laboratories . Under the motto “Start-ups and the common good in the periphery,” we were guests at Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025.
How can we create prospects for people to stay in rural areas of eastern Germany and beyond?
To seek answers to this question, the Conference of the Kulturhanse Laboratories invited participants to Chemnitz, the 2025 European Capital of Culture, on May 15. Over 100 participants accepted the invitation to the newly opened Stadtwirtschaft, one of nine maker hubs that are a central component of the Capital of Culture program.
The discussion was based on the publication of a position paper by Kulturhanse. The position paper can be found on page 20. The aim of the conference was to discuss the demands of the position paper in an interdisciplinary exchange with experts.
What do such places look like? How do they affect the local community? And what do they need?
There, representatives of federal politics met with mayors; employees from federal and state ministries exchanged ideas with operators of such third places; the press engaged in dialogue with associations and academia with foundations. In six field trips to exemplary locations of social innovation and eleven workshops led by (inter)national experts, the topics of the position paper were addressed and supplemented by the diverse perspectives of the participants.

Ahoi!
What are the findings of our conference? Who was there and what happened? Answers can be found in our brochure documenting the Conference of the Kulturhanse Laboratories.

May 15, 2025 | Chemnitz, Stadtwirtschaft
Conference of the Kulturhanse Laboratories
For more start-ups and the common good in the periphery
Imagine this: There is a place in your neighborhood where active citizens and social entrepreneurs work together to develop solutions for your local challenges. Then the cultural change we want to see would be achieved.
In this year’s European Capital of Culture Chemnitz, the Kulturhanse will set sail again on May 15, 2025. As an association of laboratories for the common good beyond large cities, we invite you to the second Kulturhanse conference at the Stadtwirtschaft.
For more start-ups and the common good in the periphery
In order to develop good solutions for current and future challenges, we need places for economic and social innovation and low-threshold encounters. Places where a cultural change can be initiated so that more people can tackle what affects them together. Places where new, sustainable economic activity is tested together in ecosystems oriented towards the common good.
What do such places look like? How do they work locally? And what do they need?
We bring together social entrepreneurs, start-up labs, researchers and doers, promoters and decision-makers to think and discuss together about the connection between an economy oriented towards the common good and the revitalization of active citizenship.
To this end, we want to use exciting national and international hubs to show how this connection unfolds its local effectiveness. And we want to discuss what framework conditions are needed for this cultural change.

As an intervention area for the Capital of Culture 2025 and a national urban development project, a meeting place for production, creative work and entertainment is being created here. To involve the neighborhood, the area was designed with various participation formats for citizens throughout the entire process. The Conference of Kulturhanse Laboratories will be a starting point. In addition to the Gründungsgarage, a theatre, a graphic design studio, the FabLab and a car repair shop are also located here.
You can reach the Stadtwirtschaft on tram line 5. It’s just a few metres from the main station to the ‘Bahnhofsstraße’ stop and then two short stops to the exit ‘Tschaikowskistraße’. Or perhaps you prefer a short walk through Chemnitz?
